Science and the Existence of God

If one lives in an urban area, a college town, or a small town with internet access and a café, one has almost certainly heard in conversation or read in a forum some variation of the following statement, “Modern science, logic, and mathematics has disproved the existence of God, making belief in God and those who hold such a belief irrational.” Some endorse the more moderate and deliberate statement, “Science, logic, and/or mathematics have made the existence of God unlikely.” Many learned, well intended, and intelligent people subscribe to the latter, arguably, with some warrant. Many of the more impolitic of the atheist or anti-religious community subscribe to the former and considerably less defensible position with terrible confidence, and the brand of zeal indicative of superficial understanding of the complex subjects under consideration. The latter group often frames this pseudo-philosophical discussion as a ‘debate.’ However, we posit that there exists no true debate between the sciences and religion, and in the posts that will follow I, along with the aid of my co-poster Dave, will demonstrate why.
